Pixaera: Classroom Mode Guidance

✔️What is Classroom Mode?

Classroom Mode allows you to take the immersion and engagement that VR training provides, and use it as a tool to facilitate a topic to a wider group of people in a classroom environment.

Classroom mode was created to address a few key problems:

  • Although VR is incredibly impactful, it is hard to scale across many people
  • Time, equipment and people are not always available to manage and facilitate sessions using multiple VR headsets

Classroom mode also provides the following capabilities:

  • You can now easily record contractors and other non-company staff as trainees.
  • You can record completions for classroom attendees by uploading them to Pixaera

Classroom Mode typically consists of a training facilitator who casts the VR headset onto a screen, inviting users/attendees to use VR, while they facilitate interactive participation from all attendees in the classroom.

✔️What Equipment do I Need?

Meta Quest Headset and/or PC

There are two ways to run the training content for classroom mode:

  1. On a PC
  2. On a VR headset casting to a PC

In both cases a PC is required and must be plugged into a larger monitor or TV screen.

HeadsetLaptop

Monitor/TV Screen

A monitor, projector or screen is important as it allows the classroom to view the content.

If available, it can be helpful to setup 2 screens. One for the VR headset casting, and another to run through the questions and answers.

Sound is an important aspect of this experience, so the TV or Monitor should have the ability to share sound, through speakers or the device itself.

HDMI Cable

If you are using a computer to cast, you need to plug the computer into the monitor/TV so that participants can easily view and follow along with the content as well as share sound from the headset.

✔️How Do I Cast?

Casting (VR)

Casting via your Browser at oculus.com/casting

💡 Recommended option by the Pixaera team.

  • You can wirelessly cast from your MetaQuest Headset directly to your browser and connect your PC to a screen. Please see the Meta video here for reference.
  • Please ensure that your headset and your PC are using the same wi-fi network.
  • Issues casting on a corporate WiFi networks are possible, which is why we recommend that you have a separate, strong WiFi network or a 5G Wi-Fi dongle/tower as an alternative to ensure things run smoothly.

Casting via the MetaQuest Developer Hub App (**Wired connection)

💡 Recommended option by the Pixaera team.

  • You can install the MetaQuest Developer Hub App and cast through a USB-C wired connection from your VR headset to your Laptop/PC. This is extremely reliable and removes any possibility of wi-fi issues, it can even be run this way completely offline with no connection.
  • However, it does require that you go through the steps to set up this app and account, but this is a one time effort. Support to set this up can be sought from your local IT team, but feel free to reach out Pixaera for help.
  • Having a relatively long USB-C to USB-C cable is a requirement to go directly from your headset to your laptop.
    • For guidance to setup and install the Meta Quest Developer Hub, please see the Meta article here
    • For guidance on how to setup a Meta Developer Account required for the above article, please see the Meta article here

Casting via Chromecast

💡 Not recommended by the Pixaera team, due to lack of official support.

  • Some of our clients choose to cast from the headset to Chromecast enabled devices (e.g. a TV or a Chromecast dongle)
  • Casting via Chromecast is not fully supported by Meta and may result in a sub-optimal experience.

✔️How to Run a Classroom Session

There are several ways to run a classroom session and the approach can be adjusted based on the needs of the class.

Remember, Pixaera Classroom is a tool to help facilitate a wider learning experience.

Some common ways to run classroom sessions include:

Fully Facilitator Led

  • 1 or 2 facilitators share the responsibility of running through the module on the headset and facilitating the class
    • Facilitator 1 would wear the VR Headset, and run through the module, understanding where and when to pause
    • Facilitator 2 would engage and ask the class if they have any questions, which answer is appropriate, and why

Participant Led

  • The preferred approach for Pixaera, this method encourages maximum participation by asking for volunteers from the audience
    • A volunteer would run through the module in the VR headset
    • The facilitator would explain how the headset works, where they will pause and what the expectations are

✔️Supporting Materials

  • There is no one-size fits all approach to running classroom sessions with Pixaera. They can be slightly different depending on the needs of the business unit/region/training approach etc
  • Some clients will print the questions out, customise the material or even use other company specific material to help demonstrate the narrative of the Pixaera module
  • Pixaera have developed supporting materials in Powerpoint or PDF format which act as a guide for the facilitator to pause and make the questions clearer. The example below is for our Working at Heights module, please contact your Pixaera representative if you require the material for our other modules.

✔️Considerations

  • The success of a classroom session will often come down to the preparedness and understanding of the trainer or facilitator, therefore we would suggest the following:
    • Schedule some time with one of the Pixaera team, either in person or online to run through the concept and give examples for how it can be delivered.
    • Access the content ahead of time - through the browser - so the trainer can familiarise themselves with the modules and content.
  • At least 2 people should be part of the session where possible in order to support successful facilitation
  • Practice and prepare your sessions ahead of time, including equipment testing and setup.

✔️Feedback

You should capture feedback from your users to understand the impact of the classroom session, understand how it can be improved, and assess learner’s attitudes towards the style of training.

Pixaera provides a ready made, easy to use feedback template which can be accessed here. This can be distributed to your team by sharing the link or using the following QR code.

✔️Completing the Classroom Sessions Template

For every Classroom Session, the training Instructor must use the ‘Pixaera Classroom Sessions Template’ available below to document the modules completed by participants as part of the Classroom Session following the session (ensuring all participants are captured).

Pixaera Classroom Sessions Template.csv

Please complete the details below on each row in the template provided:

  • Location

  • Trainee’s First Name

  • Trainee’s Last Name

  • Trainee’s Email OR ID - Either the Email or the ID needs to be present for each row. The ID should serve as a unique identifier for participants that do not have email addresses.

For trainees without email addresses, we recommend using their existing ID codes where possible to maintain consistency in data throughout the different systems.

In the absence of an existing ID, this should be created at the discretion of the instructor.

E.g., A unique numeric or alphanumeric code can be assigned to each contractor. This number can be incremented for each new contractor

    • Example: CON12345, EMP67890
  • Module Dates - For each of the 9 LSR Modules listed in the template, please add the date of the session where the module was taken by the trainee. This should be in the format of dd/mm/yyyy
